5 Minutes With Bill Tait: Head Rowing Coach - VIS image

Bill Tait is an Olympic silver medal winning coach. Bill has been an integral part of Sykes testing and innovation, and has allowed us to access his elite athletes and his data over many years. See what he had to say:

How many years have you been rowing?

When I started rowing Dono had hair, the Saints still played at Moorabbin, and Gen Horton was not even thought of.

How do you like your coffee?

Often…

If you weren't coaching, what would you be doing?

Airforce pilot would be first choice. Fall back might be Antarctic scientist.

Who is your role model and why?

Honestly, I would say my wife. I am always impressed with how she approaches life, and feel very fortunate every day to be part of it with her.

What things do you not like?

Rowers who suddenly develop hearing problems when asked to improve catch speed or leg drive, but NEVER miss the phrase “row light”….

Also Gladwrap, it’s like kryptonite…

If you could change one thing about rowing, what would it be?

Commuter bikes on the Yarra would be limited to 10km/h. Megaphones would come with a coffee cup holder. Rate watches would last more than 1 year. Every nut would be a 10mm.

What might someone be surprised to know about you?

I really like sculling.

How would Gen Horton describe you?

Bill spends his spare time looking at BioMech.
