2006 saw Sykes Racing celebrate 40 years of manufacturing excellence.  While we have grown to be the largest rowing boat builder in Australia, we have seen rowing grow and develop in leaps and bounds.

It was in 1966 when Jeff Sykes first designed a racing scull that would assist him in his desire to win an Australian Sculling Championship.  Today, 40 plus years on, we still share Jeff’s passion and desire to be the best at what we do.

Since our first rowing World Championship gold medal in 1974, Sykes Racing and our boats and designs have been the choice of the majority of Australian Rowing Teams.  We are proud of the fact that our boats have powered most of Australia’s Olympic and World Champion medals.  We sincerely hope that you will share in this success.  Just like the rowers in our boats, we love to win too, and sharing in your success when you use a Sykes boat is an important and enjoyable part of the business.

Composites are structural products comprising a combination of dissimilar constituent materials.  The overall engineering performance characteristics of a finished composite far exceed those achievable from any of the individual components used in isolation.

Sykes boats boast the highest quality composite structure. Hulls are formed utilizing the honeycomb sandwich method. The lightest and stiffest core available, nomex honeycomb, is faced either side with skins of Aramid, Kevlar cloth and carbon fibre for reinforcement.
Composite laminate is then cured under vacuum pressure at elevated temperatures. The result is a product with is both lightweight and rigid, able to withstand the greatest torsional pressure exerted on the hull during the rowing stroke.
