The pitch gauge can be used to measure stern pitch and lateral pitch, either on the swivel or pin or at the blade face.
The spirit levels and pitching faces of the guage are at 90 degrees to each other, so once the level has been set the gauge can be used on either 'A' or 'B' face providing the gauge is held the same way and not turned upside down.
To check oarlock or blade pitch
With the boat set on trestles, place the gauge on face A or B on a level surface inside the boat (i.e. monocoque deck) with the pointer set to zero. Move the sprit level to the 'level position'.
The gauge can then be taken to the pin, oarlock or blade face to measure pitch, with face A against pin or swivel or C against blade, move pointer until spirit level reads 'level' and read off pitch degrees. Normal pitch between 4 and 8 degrees at blade face.
To check lateral pitch of the pin
Place builders level or similar across the boat and hold the boat level.
Place pitch gauge on top of spirit level with pointer set to zero and set spirit level to 'level'
Whilst holding boat level, move pitch gauge to the pin at right angles to the boat and adjust pointer until spirit level reads 'level' then read off the pitch.
Nominal pitch range between vertical and 2 degrees
Two way spirit level provides accuracy at both swivel and blade tip. A level boat is no longer required to take reading.
