5 Minutes with Rowena Meredith

5 Minutes with Rowena Meredith image

Rowena Meredith has represented Australia at the U23 World Rowing Championships and in 2017, was named in the Women's Quadruple Scull for World Rowing Cups 2 and 3.

This is what she had to say:

When did you first pick up an oar and what club and state do you row for?

I think the real question here is “Have I ever put an oar down?” I first rowed in 2008. Proud rower of the home of rowing: Sydney University Boat Club and a Welshwoman through and through.

Who is your role model and why?

Rodger Federer. 1. You can’t deny he’s pretty good looking 2.He’s a fantastic tennis player who has been at the top of the game for many years now 3.He is excellent at positive branding and holding his own outside of tennis in terms of family etc

If you weren't rowing, what would you be doing?

In terms of sport…maybe sailing or waterpolo. In terms of civilian life, probably finding a job as a paramedic

What things do you not like?

I cannot describe to you my dislike for eggs. (don’t worry, I’ll still eat a cake though )

If you could change one thing about rowing, what would it be?

How hard it is! Haha, kidding. I would change the World Cups/championships predominantly being placed in Europe. Last I heard, SIRC was a pretty damn good course.

What might someone be surprised to know about you?

I really dislike eggs, along with a few other really popular rower foods (milk, avocados etc)

If you had could only listen to one playlist/CD for every ergo for the rest of your life, what would it be?

All Day or Red Hot Chilli Peppers? or Triple J?

If could pick anyone in the world to take down the course with you in a race, who would it be?

That’s tough…Maybe my family? I’d love to give them insight into why I love rowing and the feeling it gives you, but it would be the longest 2km of my life with them in there! Maybe one of the Kiwi pair?

Which is your most memorable race?

Another tough question after close to 10 years of racing…

  • Most eye opening: my first 8 race - Elite 8 at NSW State Champs where we won on the grounds of talent (as opposed to being the only one in the category) and I clearly remember thinking I wanted to replicate that feeling again!!
  • Most fun: Heat of W4X Poznan WCII - Just so fun as a crew putting in our hard work and actually moving through crews and reaping the rewards! I love surprising myself with how much hard work can pay off.
